Personal Reflection #2

At the beginning of the course I met many things which helped me to improve my writing skills for future by attending the class carefully. I’ve learned how to summarize the articles by reading them accurately and pick the main ideas from each paragraph. Summary should be organized and written with my own words. In addition of that, I have learned how to make a reference by using www.bibme.com. I should copy the URL of a website that has the article that I will summarize it and paste it on bibme.com. After putting the URL I have to fill up the information by writing the author’s name and the date of publishing. The reference must be in APA type. Also the teacher educate us how to put a quote with in-line citation from the source that I extract from bibme.com. The articles that I’ve summarized were about Preserving Emirati Tradition and Houbara bustards. Later on, the subject gets harder by writing essays. To write essays I have to follow the previous steps. But first, I have to make an outline about the essay by putting points or sentences in order to keep the essay in perfect way. Then I make a research to look for the information about the essay and take references.

I believe writing essays by following these steps carefully can help me through my career. I can make projects about my work in the future and share it with my colleagues. Besides of that, by having this kind of skills of writing it will be much helpful for the next semesters. The most thing I found it difficult and exciting is looking for information and make references.

Essay # 2

The Story of Stuff

Introduction

The movie of ‘The Story of Stuff’ (Leonard, A. 2007) is talking about a system called materials of economy and how it works. It passes through five steps such as extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal. It’s organized to control the products without affecting the environment. It turns at the end this system is not working in proper way.

Extraction

Basically, extraction is the first part of materials process by taking natural resources from the planet like woods, minerals, coal, fossil fuel and others. The problem is the world is consuming much of valuable resources without sharing it equally which damaging the environment and making the system unbalanced. The system is actually running by a powerful people who have wealth enough to control other lands and take out all their resources. Unfortunately, poor countries that are rich with natural resources are destroyed by these people.

Production

The next step of materials economy’s process is taking raw materials to manufacture several types of products. It can be food, clothes, plastics, cars and other items. However, manufacturing products definitely needs much energy which makes the products contaminated with toxic chemicals. BFR’s is added also with the products which is a super toxic for human body. Considering how much products are manufactured to release a lot of toxic chemicals and pollutants to the environment.

Distribution

The third step of this process is distribution. It’s one of the main elements of marketing items inside the country and abroad. In addition of that it will keep the service available for consumption. The author explains that “The distribution marketing's primarily role is to provide a link between production and consumption of a given good or service…” (Peterson, M. E. 2009). The price of radio 4.99$ is not the exact cost to purchase it, but it has already been paid by people who extract the natural resource and the companies who manufacture products.

Consumption

Step number four is the heart of the materials process which is called consumption. It will keep the system none stopping of production by making people to consume. The issue that Annie Leonard mentioned in her project is people are consuming many things and waste it in a short period. That’s because after 9/11 tragedy the president Of United States give an announcement to the people to shop instead of pray. By this speech the people wildly spent their money on shopping. In addition of that, media can play an important thing to help the system to flow by showing 3000 advertisements about products per a day. It will control the mind of the costumer to purchase more products while he still owns the old one in good condition.

Disposal

By having much unusable items inside the house most of them will go to the garbage. So the final step of this process is disposal. The function of the last step is to get rid of used products by using incinerators, burry it underground or dropping it in sea water. While disposing this stuff causing a negative impact to the environment leaving polluted air, unfertilized soil and contaminated water. The author said in his article “Improper garbage disposal isn't just an eyesore; it poses a serious threat to nature…” (Boehlke, J. 2010).

Consumerism in UAE

There is high rate of consumerism in UAE caused unbalance system to individuals and societies. Because of economic prosperity and high level in capita income, people spending much money on new products without any control (Vadayar, M. 2012). Advertisements always dominate the consuming behavior of a costumer. Government is trying to control the advertisements to keep the level of consuming and wasting products as low as much possible. Commercials about awareness can help also the viewers to decrease their consuming.

Conclusion

In the end, The Story of Stuff explains to us how the process working improperly which it has negative effects on the environment. It’s because the people are inattention of this system and what the consequences could be if the consumerism reaches over limit. Government should put a control on extracting natural resources to avoid damaging the environment. Recycling can be a good solution to reuse the wasted products.

Essay #1

Air Filteration

Introduction:

Air filtration is a system of purifying air from solid particles by using different kinds of fibrous materials. The technique of this system is to lower the harmful levels of these particles where air quality is needed. There are different kinds of filters like Fiberglass filter, Polyester filters, High efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA) filters and Washable air filters. Each filter has smaller opening than the others which will make the flow of air to reduce when it pass through filter elements. The important of having air filters in our life is to increase the effectiveness of luxury equipment and engines performance. Therefore, this system was installed in health facilities and workshops as personal respiratory protection. It can be helpful also to purify the air that we breathe which keep our lungs in healthy condition. In the article of Air filtration, the author clarify that " The important and dangerous dust that needs to be taken out of the air stream is four to six times smaller than a 50-micron human hair..."( Seyffer, G ).

Early history:

The idea of air filtration system came out in the early of 1800s by different scientists. In the article of Air Filtration, the author explains that "  Even though they are not outdated, various types of air filtering have existed for over 200 years..."( Whitworth, B ). It was used initially  on emergency cases such as firefighters.  Before they use fabric to cover their faces and protect them from heat and dangerous smoke. Then a mask was developed to help firefighters to enter burning buildings.

Development:

When United States begin to revolutionize with industries demanding on coal burning. Air filters came to the cities where coal is used to produce electricity to houses and

\power the trains as a fuel. Coal is the main resource of energy in America at that time. In matter of fact, the percentage of pollution becomes to increase by the passage of time and cause dark smokes to rise in the sky. A mask was developed in 1854 by John Stenhouse to assist divers and coal minors from polluted air. He use charcoal to absorb impurities and toxic gases which makes it a similar design of carbon filters we use it in these days. After while air filters become the main production in the market.

Modern development:

Recently, many tests have been done by using different methods to measure the quantity of filtration efficiency. Adding a photometer to the system to read and measure particle concentrations. Later on, a new counting devices was applied to detect single particles and classify them according to their size in exact time. Today we can rely to this exemplary of technology. However, the potential in accuracy of filtering air might reaches around 99.99%. Air filters now designed in several sizes for most varied applications and requirement. We can find it in building ventilation system such as hospitals, clinic and labs to supply pure air and lower the chances of getting diseased.

Conclusion:

At the end, I believe that the future will succeed to use a new nanotechnology to produce an advance filters that will have a various purposes in our life to make the environment safer and cleaner. A new modification of filters may reach to remove and allow different kinds of gases to pass through. In addition of that, scientists might put detectors and sensors in filters to response the types of gases and control the air flow because most of the filters will reduce the velocity of air stream which is going to the process.

Personal reflection # 1

In this course I've learned many things about writing summaries. Basically, we read any topic and search for best main idea. Also we use to search from each paragraph useful points to help us to write the summary. It's very unlikely to put details in the summary. Then we open a google website and find for the same topic and to copy the URL and paste it in bibliography to give me the refrence. The refrence should be added with the summary so it will help the reader to search for this topic easily. Another thing we have to put in the summary is quotes. The quotes is like giving the proof to the major point. Also it should be put in proper place and we copy the date with the name of author from the reference. I believe that anything we are taking in the class is helping us to build our future and write our freedom in a neat way.

Houbara bustards

The people use to breed birds in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. These birds are threatened to become extinct in North of Africa. Abu Dhabi Government made a center to conserve the birds to multiply. The center in Morocco is seeking to increase the number of released birds. The chosen birds for breeding are trained to be familiar with humans. Keeping them in cages which covered by cloth and are forbidden from release at hunting season in autumn. The average of birds increased after a year of release. In the article, Houbara bustard the author explained that  "The success of the programme can be measured though their density in the wild and by observing the number of nests - and so far these numbers are up..."(Todorova, V. 2011).
